History

Starting 60 million years ago during the Tertiary period when the Baltic region was covered in temperate forests. Before we embark on our journey back in time we should establish what Amber is. It is not a gemstone because it is not a mineral, its origins are organic, and therefore it is a gem rather than a gemstone. It is not fossilised tree sap, a popular misconception. It is in fact petrified resin from ancient trees. The difference between sap and resin is that sap is mineral and nutrient rich water. Sap flows from the roots to the leaves of a plant. Resin flows between the wood and the bark of certain tree species; resin is an oily antiseptic material protecting the tree from infection Amber is often referred to as "fossilized time capsule" because it can preserve ancient organisms and even small insects, providing a snapshot of prehistoric life.  Amber has been traded for thousands of years and has been found in archaeological sites dating back to the Neolithic period. The ancient Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians highly valued amber for its beauty and believed it had magical properties.

Pieces of Amber jewellery that have been found in Northern Europe have been radio carbon dated to about 12,000 years ago. This makes Amber along with Pearl mankind’s oldest gem...WOW!
