Throughout history, amber has been believed to have healing properties. Some cultures used it as a remedy for various ailments, and it was thought to have protective qualities. Amber was ingested in various ways and used as a general cure all. Among the various ailments Amber was considered a treatment for, rheumatism, asthma, gout, jaundice even impotence. It was mixed with water for all forms of stomach-ache and powdered and mixed with honey for eye, ear, and nose ailments.  

During the 14th century the Bubonic plague swept across Europe and Asia, this made the value of Amber multiple as it was considered one of the only effective remedies. In central Europe Amber today, beads are given to teething infants and occasionally to adults to bite on after dental treatment.
